This two-day training, held on Wednesday to Thursday , 25 - 26 February 2015, aims to improve participants’ ability to draft legal documents in English including accuracy in the use of English words and legal vocabulary in a very short time, and also help with providing skills and approaches so that the participants will be able to examine the legal pitfalls, risks and the legal consequences that may result from the incorrect or inaccurate formulation of legal texts and documents in English. Focus will also be given to the idiosyncrasies particular to, and challenges faced by, Indonesian speaking lawyers. The main purpose of this training is to provide knowledge, information and understanding regarding the techniques for drafting contracts in English, particularly in the Indonesian context. 

The program consists of 8 lessons of 1.5 hours each. In each lesson, the first 50 minutes spent on theory and the following 30 minutes on exercises and examples. Some of the matters that were presented in this training, includes: 

1) Plain English - What is it and why is it important and relevant
2) Structure, Planning, and Format  - pproaches to drafting English language legal documents
3) What not to do - Examples of things to avoid
4) Use of precedents and some examples - Important clauses to remember
5) How courts have interpreed English language contracts
6) What to do - Rules and approaches for drafting documents 
7) Important grammatical points and common mistake
8) Indonesian and English dual language - Some Examples


Our Trainer : Keld Conradsen, LL.B., LL.M., MBA
Keld Conradsen is currently foreign counsel to DDC Lawyers and Business Advisers. He has over two decades of broad commercial law experience working as a commercial lawyer advising corporations and individuals with cross border matters in multiple countries. Amongst others, he formerly worked as foreign counsel at 2 of Jakarta’s preeminent commercial law firms and before that with other large international law firms including time in Tokyo, Japan. In addition to his more recent work with Indonesian lawyers, his first degree was an LLB from a Japanese University in the Japanese language which served as initial basis in helping and working with non-native English speakers to produce English language contracts and other documents. The production of English language documents has always been central to his work which has continuously involved issues associated with the language and drafting challenges faced by non-native English speakers and working with and helping them to produce and refine English language legal documents. He also assists Hukumoline with the production of their English language products.


This training was succesfully held in Aryaduta Hotel, Jakarta.
